Amazon's Free App of the Day - Car Locator

written by: Nick Kosmides

Car Locator can be downloaded for no cost to you through the Amazon Appstore for Android, exclusive to US customers only.

Today marks the day when all your lost parked car woes are history.  For Car Locator has you covered.  Or at least the GPS module it uses to utilize global positioning so that it can display directions for you to follow sort of like a treasure hunt.  In the end, you'll find your car faster.  That is the theory.

How accurate is the GPS in a modern cellular phone?  Good question, me.  And the answer is, approximately totally depends.  That's right folks.  It depends on a number of things.  Primarily the number of satellites in clear view allowing more precise global positioning with the help of triangulation.  That's fancy for three satellites work better than two or one.  But more than three obviously work even better.  Clear view as I mentioned here, means GPS is not very effective in an in door setting.  The satellites really only work when there are zero visual obstructions from point A (you) to point B (satellite).  This includes anything from a large tree to the lower level parking garage.

Another variable is the actual GPS module in your phone and its relative software.  As with any of today's modern technology, the hardware cannot survive alone without the software.  And as was the case with my Fascinate in its early days of Android 2.1, the GPS software was all sorts of messed up.  Samsung still gets dinged in all forms of their handsets for their common inability to lock on the GPS even in the most ideal settings.

What does all this spell?  Possible failure for apps like Car Locator.  Though the code is sound and the idea is something for nearly everyone that drives or parks cars for a living, there is still the factor we tend to forget and its the GPS signal.

None the less, grab the app, then run some tests.  See if you can mark your car on the Google Map view it provides and try to get lost, then find your car using only the app.

Amazon's Free App of the Day - Golf Frontier GPS

written by: Nick Kosmides

Golf Frontier GPS is free today only from the Amazon Appstore for Android.

Download this app today to get GPS enabled views of over 15,000 downloadable golf courses.  Easily calculate the distance from any position on the course to any other point toward the hole.  And do this and more with a pretty cool skin selector.  Looks like the standard issue coat of pain is white, while they also offer a dark theme and my favorite, monochrome.  Makes it all look like a Gameboy.

Buttons on the UI are big and clear.  GPS functionality is non-obtrusive and customizable.

As the description states, "Does it make the actual shot simple? Hey, for $4.99 its not going to perform miracels, pal."  I guess the spelling error was intention, pal.

Amazon's Free App of the Day - Supermarket Scramble

written by: Nick Kosmides

Don't worry, don't hurry.  Today's free app of the day is a puzzle-ish game where you fill customer's orders from a grid of items stocked in the supermarket you are currently running, aptly named Supermarket Scramble.

With 50 levels and a couple of modes, this game really doesn't pose a dethroning threat to any of the top 3 big dog developers.  Angry Birds developer Rovio is happy perched high in the tree of success.  PopCap, the makers of the outdated Bejeweled 2 for Android and Peggle, are sitting pretty.  And Gamevil wants to say high to all the people playing their new Zenonia 3 for free and make sure they are buying up all the in-game purchases they can afford, and then some.

See you tomorrow with another great free app from the Amazon Appstore for Android.  For now, go grab Supermarket Scramble for some frantic time killing puzzle action.

Amazon's Free App of the Day - GRave Defense HD

written by: Nick Kosmides

Tower Defense can't look much better than this.  Grave Defense HD is free today care of Amazon and their fantastic Appstore.

Mmm, tastes like chicken.  Well that's zombie bat flesh actually.  This tower defense game for Android takes a dark zombie approach and throws it at your screen with vibrant colors and sharp graphics, hence the "HD" in the title.  Every detail in the game is rendered in high definition, though they don't mention how high.

The HD version also includes a new multi-screen level on top of all the Grave Defense Gold levels.  These levels are not a cake walk and if you are a beginner to this genre you may be at it for a while just to figure out where to place your first two turrets.  Quickly in the campaign you'll discover the maps have multiple routes.  This adds to the overwhelming challenge for beginner and intermediate players.  Though, to counter this gameplay design, you may choose between four difficulties, from Easy to Insane.

Having played the game for around an hour already, I like what I've seen and hope to unlock more weapons as the levels progress.  I'm looking forward to the Survival mode.  It will be interesting what that'll do to my battery.

Amazon's Free App of the Day - Lingrove

written by: Nick Kosmides

Lingrove, a unique word puzzle game, is your free app of the day from the Amazon Appstore for Android.

Simple in design, though not without a challenge. If your guessing skills are up to the task, then this is your game. You get five chances to guess all the letters of an unknown five-letter word. If the letter is correct and in the right spot, then it will be surrounded by a square and automatically carried down to the next line. If the letter is correct and not in the right spot, then it will be surrounded by a circle and you must find the correct placement of that letter.

The Secrets button at the top of the screen takes you to a sort of Lingrove tree with a broken heart in the middle. Haven't gotten far enough to know what this is all about, but the instructions say "Unlock a secret fruit for every 15XP". You will earn XP for guessing the five-letter word correctly. Keep guessing correctly and earning XP to unlock all the hidden fruit on the Secrets screen to check this game off your bucket list.

Amazon's Free App of the Day - Silly Dinosaur Riddles: Seymour Simon

written by: Nick Kosmides

Silly Dinosaur Riddles: Seymour Simon is free today on the Amazon Appstore for kids.  Ha, see what I did there?  A children's app made by Franklin Jr. Apps, this book of riddles about dinosaurs appears to be a product of Silicon Valley, Ca.  You'd think we Californians were funnier than this.

While I have a child or two of my own, I respect the fact that kids are not looking at this world the same as us and see things from a different angle, literally.  With this app and a simple understanding of dinosaur facts, your child may actually enjoy this app, while you will loathe it.  Its nonsensical humor clearly not written by comedians.  In this situation I would be bold enough to say that I could potential write better jokes than this, no promises.  That should be enough vagueness to kill a medium rhino with a small Sprite.

The reviews are still coming in and its very precisely 2:1 in favor of 1-star reviews that this app is not working out on Android.  Some say its a shallow app that just doesn't have enough content, some say it doesn't install or freezes on the very first screen, others say the only good thing about it are the drawings.  While initial 5-star reviews were dramatic and scripted to clearly sell the product, not typical of a consumer writing a layman review of an app but more typical of a developer or someone related to the app's development.

If you'd like to test all these theories on your child, or your phone yourself, hit the market link below.

Amazon's Free App of the Day - Delicious: Emily's Taste of Fame

written by: Nick Kosmides

Here's an app for all the Emily's out there, Delicious: Emily's Taste of Fame.

Another time management game for Android.  One of the most popular genre on the platform apparently.  This time you play a girl named Emily propelled into an awkward situation when her car breaks down and she doesn't have the money to fix it.  Her and her friend are offered a job at a local cafe to earn the money, but it quickly becomes a challenge for Emily as her friend conveniently gets sick.  Now Emily is working on her own in this busy cafe.

Play through 50 levels and earn all 18 in-game trophies.  No Open Feint support, though that isn't the most common appendage when speaking of time management apps.  The finally goal appears to be the possibility of being a TV star.  The plot thickens.

Pick up the game before midnight to save yourself $3.
